Political education without complication
Let’s shape a better future?
Brazil is living an unprecedented political crisis. Presidential impeachment, economic downturn, major taskforce of investigation on corruption issues, strikes from unions and street manifestation from social movements of all kinds are some of the events that are shaking the nation, promoting serious shifts in power configuration and altering substantially the political scenario.
As many crises, this brings also opportunities. Amplified by social media, these events have taken the subject of political affairs from general disinterest to one of the nation’s top subjects (specially between young audience), surpassing even popular sports (such as soccer) in mass media coverage. But still, interest in not transforming in participation, due to a missing link: knowledge.
When young people are asked “what would bring you closer to politics?”, 27% answered “clearer and more accessible information to easy understanding of politics”, 22% “if I knew more about how politics works in Brazil” and 20% “if I had better understating on how to contribute to political decisions”.
These are some of the data collected from Box1824 survey, that shows a clear pattern: young people do not reject politics in general. They reject the current, dominant practices that they see, but are eager to participate, needing only guidance and information on where and how to do it. This is the right time to introduce massive, high-quality educational solutions accessible to people all over the country. That is why we founded Politize!
Politize! aims to strengthen Brazilian democracy through online and offline educational resources that seek to stop political apathy at its source: ignorance. We are working to fill a major gap in Brazil’s educational system, using technology to make learning about politics easier (and fun!).
Online, we provide access to high-quality content that helps people learn how politics work, and how to engage in it All the contents are free and published in likeable medias – such as infographics, videos and short texts -, seeking to give access to this fundamental good: the knowledge about our political system. In less than 3 years, our digital channels have reached over to 33 million unique users, generating more than 130 million minutes of online learning.
Offline, we created network-based programs where all this content is taken to schools, universities and communities all over the country. After many tests, we developed active methodologies (problem-based, roleplaying etc.) that engage people in more constructive learning, promoting understanding and strong value change. Not only formal knowledge about politics and justice is acquired, but important 21st century skills (empathy, communication, conflict management) are developed along the process. In less than 2 years we have reached over 56.000 people in offline programs, and our Ambassadors network is now in 127 cities in Brazil.
Politize! doesn’t have attachments to any party or political thinking. Our intent is not to convince, but to give people better conditions to make their own judgement. All the care with plurality is taken by a group of curators, and any user will be able to make public his/her eventual dissatisfaction, reinforcing a fundamental value democracy: transparence.
Even though our contents and methodologies are only in Portuguese and focused on Brazil’s reality, we’re open to suggestions and to build a new projects together with people and institutions from any part of the world. We know that that democratic strengthening is a global issue. Working in a collaborative way we can go further.
